5 Signs Your Hormones Are Out of Balance (And It’s Not Just Stress)

Hey sweet friend,

If you’re a Christian woman in your 30s, 40s, or early 50s and you’ve been walking around thinking, “I’m just stressed… right?” — I want to gently invite you to pause. I’ve been there. I used to blame every symptom on a busy schedule, ministry demands, or “not enough quiet time with the Lord.” But after walking through perimenopause myself and coaching hundreds of women, I’ve learned something important: sometimes it’s not stress at all. Sometimes it’s your hormones waving a big red flag, asking for support.

God designed our bodies with incredible wisdom (Psalm 139:14), and when estrogen, progesterone, and even cortisol start shifting in perimenopause, the signs can feel confusing. The good news? Once you recognize them, you can start addressing the root instead of just powering through.

Here are 5 common signs that your hormones may be out of balance — even if your life looks “fine” on paper.

1. You’re exhausted… even after a full night’s sleep You wake up tired. You drink the coffee. You still feel like you’re dragging by 10 a.m. This isn’t the same as the normal “busy mom” tired. When hormones fluctuate, your body struggles to regulate energy at the cellular level. It’s not laziness or poor time management — it’s often a signal that your adrenal glands and reproductive hormones are out of sync. I used to call this my “why am I so tired all the time?” season. Rest alone wasn’t fixing it.

2. Hot flashes or night sweats that come out of nowhere One minute you’re fine. The next you’re suddenly burning up, heart racing, sheets soaked. These aren’t “just hot flashes” to brush off. They’re your body’s thermostat reacting to dropping or spiking estrogen. Many women tell me they feel embarrassed or dismissed (“It’s just stress!”), but friend, this is your hormones talking. And it can happen even while your periods are still somewhat regular.

3. Brain fog that makes you question your own sanity Forgetting why you walked into a room. Starting a sentence and losing your train of thought mid-sentence. Feeling like your brain is moving through molasses. This one hit me hard. I’d pray for clarity and still feel scattered. Hormone shifts affect neurotransmitters, especially during perimenopause. It’s not a character flaw or a spiritual deficiency — it’s biology asking for balance.

4. Mood swings or anxiety that feel completely out of character You’re normally steady and full of joy in the Lord… but lately small things make you snap or tear up. Or that low-level anxiety won’t let you rest even when nothing major is wrong. When progesterone drops, it can affect how your brain handles GABA (your natural calming chemical). I’ve heard so many Christian women say, “I feel like I’m failing at trusting God,” when really their body chemistry was simply off.

5. Stubborn weight gain around your middle — no matter what you eat or how much you move You’re eating clean, you’re walking, maybe even lifting weights… and the scale still won’t budge. Or the weight is settling in places it never did before. This is often tied to insulin sensitivity changes and cortisol working overtime because your hormones are shifting. It’s not about willpower. It’s about your body needing different support in this season.

Sister, if several of these sound familiar, please hear this: You are not broken. You are in a natural, God-designed transition. Perimenopause is real, and it doesn’t mean your best years are behind you. It means it’s time to listen to your body and steward it well — body, mind, and spirit.

The beautiful part? When we address the root with gentle, natural support (nutrition, targeted supplements, stress resilience, and yes, time in the Word), many women start feeling like themselves again. Not a younger version — a wiser, more peaceful version who knows how to honor the temple God gave her.

If you’re nodding along right now, I’d love to walk with you.
